Review: Maybe This Time by Kasie West

“Sometimes the most beautiful things don’t last very long.”

Release Date: July 9, 2019
Thank you to Point Publication for an ARC of this book!

One year. Nine events. Nine chances to . . . fall in love?

Weddings. Funerals. Barbecues. New Year’s Eve parties. Name the occasion, and Sophie Evans will be there. Well, she has to be there. Sophie works for the local florist, so she can be found at every big event in her small hometown, arranging bouquets and managing family dramas.

Enter Andrew Hart. The son of the fancy new chef in town, Andrew is suddenly required to attend all the same events as Sophie. Entitled, arrogant, preppy Andrew. Sophie just wants to get her job done and finish up her sketches so she can apply to design school. But every time she turns around, there is Andrew, getting in her way and making her life more complicated. Until one day she wonders if maybe complicated isn’t so bad after all.

Kasie West is an instant buy for me since I adore stories of meet-cutes and relatable characters. I’m sad to say this was just not for me. The story fell flat and felt like there was no real plot except for the different events. I’ve never had a story that just jumped from event to event with no in between and it took me a while to get into it. I felt like nothing actually happened during the in-between time which was just weird. There would be certain conflicts at the events that then were put on pause until the next event. The characters would just interact during these events I guess. The events also began to felt a tad repetitive by the end with the same itinerary for each.

I had a hard time liking Sophie, I just couldn’t connect with her character. All her relationships had issues and she was avoiding all of them because she just planned on leaving to follow her fashion designer dreams. The love interest Andrew and her best friend Micah both had their own character flaws going on, but they owned up to them and had real growth. I think they also helped Sophie to find herself and what she truly wanted. The relationships between the three of the was hard to deal with for the first 3/4’s of the story though. There was always conflict between Andrew and Sophie over small inconsequential things that then blew up at each event. The friendship of Sophie and Micah was such a weird one. I felt like neither really supported the others dreams or that they might want completely different futures. Sophies’ relationship with her brother was super cute though and made me like her a bit more.

Overall the first 3/4’s of the story it really felt like no one in this story liked anyone else. They were all just in their own little worlds being rude to each other and kind of putting each others dreams down but then somehow came together in the end. Maybe more happened during that down time then I thought? There either needed to be less events that more happened at or we needed more of a transition between events to spend more time with Sophie, Andrew and Micah.
