Wow. Just WOW. This book blew my mind in the best way possible. This review might be kinda short because there is a HUGE twist at the beginning that I didn’t see coming which effects the entire book. It was the perfect summer read and not at all the simple, yet cute, contemporary roommate romance I thought I was getting; it was so much more.
Clara has always been the good girl in a rich family full of scandal. This is the summer that is going to change everything though. She’s thrown caution to the wind and moved to LA to finally get her best guy friend to see her as more than a friend, only to have him abandon her to a Craigslist rando rommate the second she touches down. Not exactly the start to childhood friends to lovers story she thought she was starring in. Her new roommate Josh is hot though and maybe this summer will break her dry spell after all.
I expected Clara to be this stuck up East Coast bit** that looked down on others and flaunted her family name. That could not be further from the truth. She knew she was privileged but was so kind, smart and a hard worker. Once she put her mind to something she gave her all. I wanted to be friends with her, she seemed like a genuinely good person who was held back by the scandals that have torn her family apart.
The book is a dual POV so we get to not only Claras’ perspective but some chapters from Josh as well. He was STEAMY, laid back and funny. He championed women and was definitely a feminist, and there’s truly nothing sexier than that. He complimented Clara well; a little spice to her life, not at all afraid to take some chances. He was an unconventional choice for her and I loved it.
Sex is a huge part of this book, especially sex positivity for women. It is something that is still stigmatized and I liked the authors approach to this topic. Josh and Clara had steamy scenes that were not only hot as hell, but focused around Clara and her pleasure. I honestly can’t think of a hotter/sexier book that I’ve come across. The way it was written was definitely geared towards women with women pleasure dominated scenes. I actually think Josh maybe gets off like twice during this book? Like I said hot as hell and maybe try out the audiobook if you want some audio porn.
The Roommate was such a well written book with a great cast of characters and a positive message. It’s more than meets the eye and don’t be fooled by the seemingly innocent cover.
