Series: All the Stars and Teeth #1

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Rating: ★★★

All The Stars and Teeth is one of my most anticipated releases of 2020 and I’m ecstatic to be a part or this blog tour hosted by The Fantastic Flying Book Club! Why am I so excited? Well, not only did I get an advanced copy of this book (thank you Imprint!!!), but I also got to do my FIRST EVER author interview. Like a full blown interview, not just a guest post. So thank you to The FFBC for selecting me for this honor (yes, I’m a tad dramatic) and to Adalyn Grace for taking the time to answer all my questions. I loved this book and I hope you guys check it out for yourselves.

She will reign.

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.

When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.

But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.

I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.

1) What was your favorite book growing up and why?

My obsession with Twilight knew no bounds. I lived in the same state as the author and went to all of her book signings, every midnight release, was totally Jacob obsessed (I literally had a dog tag that said “I ❤ Jacob” for goodness sake), and my parents even let a family friend paint the Twilight Lexicon banner and covers on my bedroom walls.

I’m not even embarrassed. I was in so deep.

2) What has the publishing process been like for you? Is All the Stars and Teeth the first book you’ve written?
All the Stars and Teeth was actually the fourth manuscript I wrote, and the second one I queried. While the querying process was astonishingly painless with ATSAT, I’d received 70-100 rejections on the YA sci-fi I queried prior to it. I had been in Pitch Wars with that sci-fi, which really helped me learn about editing and gave me a more realistic look at the publishing industry.

Publishing is so different than writing. There’s a lot more admin work, photoshopping, interacting, deadlines, and expectations that were never there when it was just writing for fun. It’s certainly a lot of work, but I’m very grateful to do what I do!

Now, I’m knee-deep in Book 2 edits, have written six manuscripts, and am eager to continue writing many more 🙂

3) What are some of your favorite tropes to read? What about to write?
I love reading enemies to lovers! In terms of writing, they’re not necessarily tropes, but I really love group casts, messy magic, romance, and action scenes. So those will likely make appearances in all of my books.

In terms of like a firm trope, I love when characters and put together in a situation where there’s one bed or a shared room. I eat that stuff up

4) Compare your cast of characters to dessert. Which dessert matches each character best?
Amora- Maybe an apple tart? Or something fancy like lemon meringue pie. Something a little tart.
Ferrick- Key lime Pie. Something simple, classic, delicious.
Bastian- Salted Caramel, or something so ridiculous and extra like little decorated cheesecake cups or champagne marshmallows.
VataeaSea salt taffy. Probably like the really chewy kind that pulls your teeth out.

5) If the cast of All the Stars and Teeth lived in our world, what jobs do you think they’d have?
Amora – I asked my boyfriend what he thought, and he said “executioner.” Hahah, I feel like she’d be some sort of ambassador who gets to travel and really feel like she’s doing good in the world! Amora would definitely be in some sort of leadership position.

Bastian – He’d 100% still be somewhere on a ship. Traveling. Swindling. Maybe he’d still even be a pirate, or some sort of explorer. There’s no world where Bastian would ever have an office job.

Ferrick – While he could easily work at a hospital, I feel like he’d likely work in politics.

Vataea – I literally cannot see Vataea working, lol. I feel like she’d just charm her way into living at some beautiful, all-inclusive tropical resort.

6) The magic system featured in All the Stars and Teeth is extremely unique. Where did you get the idea from?
Thank you! A lot of work went into attempting to make it as unique as possible, while still having some of those classic fantasy elements that I love. A lot of it was really just me sitting down with a pen and plotting things out, as boring as that was. I thought up different kinds of magics (some fairly simple and seen before, like telekinesis and elemental magic), but my goal was to try to find unique ways for those characters to utilize those magics. I thought about how their environments/living situations might influence their magic, as well as how someone might be able to adjust their own magics to fit personal needs. I’m sure inspiration from books and shows I love (and probably anime in particular!) have indirectly leeched into my writing, but ultimately it was a lot of me writing ideas down in a notebook and really playing with them until they all worked together.

7) The kingdom of Visidia is segregated by types of magic. Did you base the kingdom and their way of life off of any real life examples?
I did not! I actually worked very hard to do the opposite, and not draw from real world examples 🙂

8) Is there anything or any message you want readers to take away from your first book?
I’d say that, if anything, people take away some of Amora’s bravery. Be whoever you want to be, and go after whatever it is that you want, fearlessly and unapologetically.

Adalyn Grace graduated Summa Cum Laude when she was 19-years-old. She spent four years working in live theater, and acted as the managing editor of a nonprofit newspaper. During and after college, she studied storytelling as an intern on Nickelodeon Animation’s popular animated show, The Legend of Korra (sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender). She was a participant in Pitch Wars 2016, and is a former literary agent intern for an established agency.

Adalyn splits time between San Diego and Arizona with her bossy cat and two dorky dogs, and spends her days writing full time while trying to find the city’s best burrito.

She has several projects in the works, and hopes to continually push the boundaries and explore the limits of upper young adult fiction.
